    Gretchen Murphy

    Gretchen Murphy (Ph.D. University of Washington; Editor, 1865–1914) is Sue Goldston Lebermann Endowed Professor of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. Specializing in U.S. literature to 1914, she is the author of New England Women Writers, Secularity, and the Federalist Politics of Church and State; Shadowing the White Man’s Burden: U.S. Imperialism and the Problem of the Color Line; and Hemispheric Imaginings: The Monroe Doctrine and Narratives of U.S. Empire. She has been awarded a Hurford Family Fellowship at the National Humanities Center and a Benjamin Franklin Stevenson Fellowship at the Massachusetts Historical Society.
