MAKE PRIMARY SOURCES AND HISTORICAL DEBATES COME ALIVE

In each Flashpoints game students take on the role of a historically accurate person, each with their own motivations and objectives, and engage in a series of structured debates. Students must make convincing and historically plausible arguments, grounded in primary source documents, to win over their peers.

TEACH STUDENTS ABOUT HISTORICAL CONTINGENCY AND EMPATHY AS THEY PRACTISE ARGUMENT AND TEAMWORK

Playing a role, students are highly engaged, reading primary sources with purpose. Flashpoints games naturally develop historical empathy and also help students understand historical contingency since outcomes are not fixed. Students also practise skills such as public speaking, argumentation, teamwork and civic engagement.

CLASSROOM-TESTED MATERIALS FOR EFFECTIVE AND COMPACT ACTIVITIES

Each Flashpoints game is a carefully constructed series of debates and activities making an interactive classroom easy for anyone to implement. Flashpoints games are designed to take about one week of class time in a survey course (from 2 to 4 class sessions) inviting students to experience firsthand key issues, debates and sources from the period.

AN AFFORDABLE AND FLEXIBLE OPTION FOR ANY TEACHING STYLE

Flashpoints games are not only easy to incorporate into any syllabus and teach; they are also an incredibly affordable way to engage your students with content in a new way. They are also available in a mobile-friendly ebook format for students on the go. The result is an ideal set of learning materials for a “flipped classroom” experience and options for any teaching style.
