BASED ON COGNITIVE RESEARCH

Calculations in Chemistry uses cognitive research about how novices solve problems to give intimidated students a sound, consistent learning system that focuses on overcoming their biggest challenge in introductory chemistry: maths. Each chapter is subdivided into lessons that reinforce the required maths with a complete introduction, followed by Try It and then Practice.

SELF-PACED

Specific instructions are often provided to help students determine where they should start and how to stay on task. Students are given bite-size pieces of information and then asked to practise. Practice sessions are integrated into each chapter and answers are provided at the end of the chapter to facilitate progress checks.

FOCUSED ON THE BASICS

Chapters 1–5 cover material that is usually covered in one chapter of an introductory text. The authors take great care to help students learn and use these fundamental skills before moving on.

SUPPORTED BY SMARTWORK5

Calculations in Chemistry is now supported by a Smartwork5 course containing over 325 questions spanning all 24 chapters with a modular design allowing instructors to assign the chapters their students need. The Smartwork5 problems function as "quiz" questions, with most of the questions using algorithmic variables to enable continued practice.
