Description

From Congressman Jared Huffman, a behind-the-scenes look at the shocking extent of Christian nationalism’s reach in our government—and the fight to defend church-state separation.

Sinclair Lewis is said to have warned: “When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross.” On January 6, 2021, Rep. Jared Huffman saw something chillingly close to that vision. Thousands of Christians following self-declared prophets stormed the Capitol. The insurrection should have been a national wake-up call about Christian nationalism. Instead, most Americans and politicians looked away.

No Prophets argues that Christian nationalism is now America’s most dangerous political movement. Huffman pulls back the curtain on religious extremists behind the insurrection who have only grown more powerful with Trump’s return. Openly vowing to destroy church-state separation and democracy as we know it, they now work inside the highest levels of government to drive domestic and foreign policy, reshape federal agencies, undermine science and education, and tilt elections. The endgame: an authoritarian theocracy that imposes their religious beliefs by force of law.

Drawing on his experiences as a formerly devout Christian and the only Humanist ever to serve in Congress, Huffman maps the movement’s largely hidden landscape—taking readers behind the scenes of the Capitol, exposing the tactics and myths Christian nationalists use to advance their agenda, and showing how America is imperiled by our reluctance to confront threats cloaked in Christianity.

But, he argues, it’s not too late. If we muster a broad interfaith coalition grounded in shared commitment to democracy, we can reclaim the public square for everyone—religious and secular—to share on equal terms.

No Prophets is a clear-eyed, urgent appeal to defend the secular foundations of democracy.

Reviews

"A fiery denunciation of the theocrats who seek to impose their views—and policies—on this constitutional republic." — Kirkus Reviews

"This fantastic book introduces a cast of reactionaries who have mounted an assault on America’s constitutional democracy—and holds accountable the leaders who have enabled its rise and brought us to the brink of fascism." — Katherine Stewart, New York Times best-selling author of Money, Lies, and God

"As someone who cherishes both my faith and our constitutional republic, I found No Prophets both sobering and inspiring. Jared Huffman shows how Christian nationalism betrays the very principles it claims to defend, and he does so with clarity, compassion, and unflinching honesty." — Nancy Pelosi, former Speaker of the House of Representatives

"A compelling call to govern the United States with reason rather than authoritarianism. The time is now. Solid separation of church and state is the only way to preserve religious freedom—and to protect our democracy. Please read on." — Bill Nye (the Science Guy)

"As a conservative Christian who fought extremism from inside the Republican Party, I recommend this book to Americans of every political and religious background who want to understand what we’re up against—and why we must stand together to save the country we love." — Adam Kinzinger, United States Air Force officer and former United States representative

"Let me offer a prayer of thanks for Jared Huffman’s crucial dissection of Christian nationalism, a heresy that threatens both our democracy and the gospel message. May his powerful words serve as a rallying cry for the work that must be done to safeguard the future." — Bill McKibben, author of Here Comes the Sun and founder of 350.org
